We're huge snow lovers (even the pups!) and snow days are our absolute favorite. Which is a really good thing since we get a LOT of snow, living in the high mountains of Colorado.

Like, a LOT – we had 4ft fall in one day earlier this year, which was insane and so much fun. Luckily I had stocked fridge + freezer, lots of warm drinks, and tons of things for us to do! Which was great, because we couldn't leave the house for almost a week. That lump down there? That's our SUV 😆
These stay-at-home date ideas offer intimacy and warmth, turning a frosty night into memories you'll cherish!
Creative Indoor Activities
When the frostiness sets in, staying home can be just as exciting as any outdoor adventure. Cozy up together and dive into some fun indoor activities that not only keep you entertained but also bring you closer together. Let's explore some creative ideas to make your stay-at-home winter date a memorable one.
Cooking Together
Cooking together is a fun way to spend the snow day. Pick a hearty winter recipe like beef stew or experiment with baking sugar cookies. Feeling adventurous? Try making homemade pasta or a decadent chocolate soufflé, or my personal favorite, molten lava cake!
- Plan ahead: Decide on your menu together and shop for ingredients as part of the date once you know a storm is coming. I keep ingredients for some of our favorite meals in the freezer so we're ready!
- Divide and conquer: One can handle the chopping while the other stirs the pot (or manages the timer for the cookies).
- Enjoy the rewards: Set up a candlelit dinner on the dining table to enjoy your cozy meal!
DIY Craft Projects
Nothing beats a hands-on project completed together which you can also admire for years to come. Create your own seasonal decorations or get crafty with a personalized scrapbook. Here’s what you can consider:
- Holiday decorations: Design your own ornaments, string together popcorn garlands, or make a festive wreath.
- Scrapbook: Capture holiday memories by creating pages with photos, ticket stubs, and notes.
Home Movie Marathon
Transform your living room into a cinema full of nostalgia and comfort. Choose cozy movie themes and binge together:
- Theme ideas: Classic holiday films, favorite childhood movies, or entire film series.
- Snack attack: Popcorn, your choice of candy, and hot chocolate will do wonders.
- Create the ambiance: Gather blankets, dim the lights, and perhaps even build a pillow fort for two.

Game Night Fun
Forget about the outside chill with an engaging game night. A little competition can be fun!
One time my parents were visiting so we had a marathon Risk session double date. We didn't know going into it how very long of a game it was, so we were playing until 2am while it snowed. We had lots of junk food and laughs!
- Board games: Try chess, Scrabble, or a classic like Risk.
- Video games: Go retro with Mario Kart or a co-op games.
- Friendly competition: Create a scoreboard and have a small prize for the winner.
Puzzle Time
Working on puzzles during a date night is another great idea, especially if your power's gone out but you have lots of lanterns/flashlights. It's both relaxing and mentally stimulating, giving you time to chat while searching for that elusive piece.
- Choose your challenge: From 500 to 1,000 pieces, or try a puzzle theme that resonates with an interest you both share.
- Benefits: Apart from testing your patience, puzzles promote cooperation and can lead to those great “a-ha!” moments.
We're huge puzzle lovers, so we have a subscription to Completing The Puzzle so we can have fresh puzzles monthly without having to deal with storing them when we're done!
These activities are more than just ways to pass the time; they're chances to connect and build memories. Whether you're honing your culinary skills or piecing together an intricate puzzle, remember, the real treasure is the connection you foster along the way.
Creating a Cozy Atmosphere
Imagine snuggling up on a chilly winter night with your special someone, your home transformed into a warm oasis. Creating the perfect cozy atmosphere can elevate any stay-at-home date into a magical evening. Here's how you can set the stage for a memorable winter night in.
Lighting and Decor
The right lighting and decor can turn your living room into a haven of comfort. Fairy lights and candles are your best friends here. They provide a soft, glowing ambiance that feels almost like a warm hug. Drape fairy lights along walls, windows, or even create a twinkling backdrop for your date. Lanterns or glass jars with small candles inside can add that extra touch of magic.
Don't forget about blankets! We have approximately 2985 blankets in this house, I swear! Layering a selection of cozy throws and pillows can instantly make any space feel more inviting.
Whether it's a fluffy throw or a quilt you've had for years, these layers create a nest of comfort you both can snuggle into. I treated myself to a heated blanket and omg it's been life-changing for those chilly nights!
Winter Scents and Flavors
Scents have the power to transport us, and there's nothing like winter scents to make you feel cozy and warm. Essential oils or scented candles with hints of pine or cinnamon can evoke the spirit of the season.
Imagine the calming scent of pine, reminiscent of evergreen forests, or the spicy warmth of cinnamon, bringing memories of holiday treats. If you have a crockpot, you can even do a crockpot fall potpourri.
Setting Up a Hot Beverage Bar
What's cozier than curling up with a hot drink? Setting up a DIY hot drink bar warms you up and adds some toasty fun to your date.
You can easily create a hot chocolate or tea station with a variety of toppings and mix-ins to make your perfect warm winter drink.
Here's what you need to get started:
- Hot Chocolate Essentials:
- A variety of chocolate: dark, milk, or white chocolate
- Marshmallows, whipped cream, and candy canes
- Tea Delights:
- A selection of teas: herbal, black, and green
- Honey, lemon, and cinnamon sticks
- Apple Cider Station:
- A crockpot or stove pot filled with apple cider.
- Cinnamon sticks, mulling spices, or orange slices.
If you're in the mood for boozy drinks, have some Rum Chata on hand for hot chocolate or coffee, or have Fireball or honey whiskey for spiced tea or cider.
I usually pull out our Instant Pot and set it on warm with apple cider and mulling spices, then we add a splash of Fireball to our drinks as the sun sets. It's so warm and spicy!
Creating a cozy atmosphere is about engaging all your senses—seeing the soft lights, smelling the nostalgic scents, and tasting the delicious flavors. It's these little details that make for an unforgettable winter date at home. Why not give it a try and see how a little comfort can transform your night?

While you're dreaming about your perfect trip, you can “visit” potential destinations without leaving your living room:

- Use Google Earth: “Fly” to different locations and explore them from above.
Our bucket list vacay is a few days in Iceland followed by flying to Finland and visiting the Arctic Circle. We'll pop the webcam up from Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi and have it streaming while we dream and talk about our future trip.
Planning Activities
Now for the fun part – deciding what you'll do on your trip:
- Create a shared document: Use Google Docs or a similar tool to jot down ideas and links as you go.
- Play “Travel Roulette”: Write down different activities on slips of paper, then take turns drawing them out and deciding if they make the cut for your itinerary.
- Design your dream day: Each of you plan out your perfect day at the destination, then compare notes and merge your ideas.

Head Outside!
Just because it's snowing doesn't mean you can't go out and enjoy it! Bundle up in your warmest clothes, cozy hat & gloves, and go play in the snow.
You can make snow angels together, build a snow fort (much more difficult than it looks!) or have a snowball fight. Then you can head back inside to get all warm & toasty again!
Put Up A Christmas Tree
If you celebrate Christmas, why not put up your tree while the snow falls outside? I don't care how early we get our first snow, that tree is going up! 😂 It's a great way to spend the snow day and welcome the holiday season!
