We first came to Cripple Creek when we were deciding where to live in Colorado. We wanted a remote, small-town life while being close enough to a bigger city and airports to make traveling to family in Florida much easier.
We drove up through Phantom Canyon and absolutely fell in love with Cripple Creek and Woodland Park as we made our way back down to Colorado Springs. A year later, we made our move to nearby Divide, so now we get to explore everything these towns have to offer!

Another must-visit is the Outlaws & LawMen Jail Museum. This museum was once the Teller County Jail and now showcases the law enforcement history of the town. Exhibits highlight the challenges faced by lawmen during the town's more unruly days.

And no trip to Cripple Creek is complete without a visit to see the Cripple Creek donkeys! They're descendants of the original mining donkeys and are cared for by the Two Mile High Club.
In the summer, the donkeys wander the streets of Cripple Creek. In the winter, they make their way back to the winter pasture, located near the Mountain View Adventure Park. There's usually a supply box filled with treats available for a donation, and the treats are also available at local shops.
Quick note: please don't feed them anything other than those approved treats, because the donkeys can have health issues from other food! They are on a tightly controlled diet and while giving them apples and carrots can seem like a fun idea, it throws that diet out of balance. Stick with the approved treats so we can keep them happy & healthy!

This 45-minute trip is both educational and enjoyable, making it a perfect way to understand the rich history of Cripple Creek from a unique perspective.

Cripple Creek is surrounded by stunning landscapes. You can hike along picturesque trails. One of the most popular trails is the Crags Trail. It's closer to Divide, but makes a great spot to stretch your legs before heading to Cripple Creek.
It offers beautiful views of the Pikes Peak. You’ll find unique rock formations along the way. We've heard of the occasional moose sightings there but haven't been lucky enough to see one here yet.
Another must-do is taking a short hike to see Rita the Rock Planter. This giant wooden troll sculpture, nestled in the hills near Victor, is just a stone's throw from Cripple Creek. Created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, Rita is a 100% recycled wood masterpiece with a mission – she's busy filling in the scars left by old mining operations.
If hiking's not really your thing, the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine tour might interest you. You will go 1,000 feet underground and see how gold mining worked. It's a mix of adventure and history. I'm a tiny bit claustrophobic so we haven't done this yet, but I'm down to give it a shot given how cool it looks!

If you're in the mood to splurge a little, the new Chamonix Casino Hotel is absolutely gorgeous. It's like Vegas decided to vacation in Cripple Creek. The place has a sleek, modern vibe. Step inside and you'll find a buzzing casino floor with all the latest games – perfect if you're feeling lucky.
Even if gambling isn't your thing, the restaurants alone are worth a visit, and your taste buds will thank you! The whole place just feels special and luxe. It's the kind of spot where you can dress up a bit, enjoy a fancy dinner, and pretend you're high rollers for the night. A little bit of luxury goes a long way in making a memorable date night!
Our personal favorite is the Golden Nugget Cripple Creek. It's where we've had the best luck! And by luck, I really mean it just takes us a little longer to get through our $25-50 we bring with us and call it a donation lol.
But sometimes we get a little extra lucky and win enough to cover our dinner at Saltgrass Steakhouse…with a lil pineapple margarita on the side!

As you wind your way through the canyon, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. The road hugs the contours of the land, revealing incredible views around every bend. Keep an eye out for the two narrow tunnels carved right through the rock face – they're a tight squeeze that might have you both holding your breath.
One of the coolest stops along the way is the Adelaide Bridge. This old steel bridge from 1894 is still standing strong, and it's the perfect spot to stretch your legs and snap a few photos. Just imagine the stories this bridge could tell!
Wildlife lovers, get your cameras ready. You might spot mule deer grazing in meadows or eagles soaring overhead. And if you're lucky (and quiet), you might even catch a glimpse of an elk herd or a fox!
Now, a word to the wise: this road can be a bit rough, especially after a good rain. It's doable in most cars, but if you've got a vehicle with a bit more clearance, you'll have a smoother ride. And trust me, it's worth taking your time – plan for about 2-3 hours to really soak it all in. You can even pack a picnic lunch and pull off in one of the meadows to eat and relax.

If Phantom Canyon Road is a stroll through history, Shelf Road is more like a roller coaster ride carved into the side of a mountain. This 25-mile stretch between Cripple Creek and Cañon City isn't for the faint of heart, but boy, does it deliver on thrills and views.
They call it Shelf Road for a reason – in some spots, it feels like you're driving on a narrow shelf clinging to the limestone cliffs. As you navigate the twists and turns, you'll be treated to jaw-dropping views of Fourmile Canyon that'll make you want to pull over at every turn (and there are plenty of safe spots to do just that).
Fair warning: Shelf Road is best tackled with a high-clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicle. It's not exactly a smooth highway, but that's part of the adventure. Plan for about 3-4 hours round trip, and pack some snacks and water.
We really didn't find the drive that scary, but we regularly take mountain drives that are a little rough, so your tolerance may vary!

At over 9,400 feet above sea level, Cripple Creek might leave you feeling a bit woozy at first – and no, it's not just the romance in the air.
Take it easy your first day or two. Drink water like it's going out of style (seriously, hydration is key and my family laughs when I'm constantly nagging them to drink more water, but no one has gotten sick visiting us yet!), and maybe hold off on that epic hike or wild night at the casino right away.
Altitude sickness is no joke, but it can be avoided if you pace yourself. Some folks swear by carb-loading (as if you needed an excuse for extra pasta), while others pop an aspirin to help with the adjustment.
We personally like Liquid IV hydration packs with electrolytes whenever we're struggling with air pressure changes, especially from incoming thunderstorms or snowstorms, and they work great for warding off altitude issues!
