Hiking Trails and Mountain Excursions

Hiking is an excellent way to connect with nature and each other. Choose trails that match your fitness levels and interests. Popular options include:

  • Day hikes in local parks
  • Multi-day backpacking trips
  • Mountain summit climbs

Pack essentials like water, snacks, sunscreen, and first-aid supplies. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and dress in layers. If you're like me and aren't much of a hiker, use AllTrails to find easier hikes near you!

Take breaks to enjoy scenic viewpoints and wildlife spotting. Capture memories with photos, but remember to put the camera away and simply enjoy each other's company too.

Cycling Together on Scenic Bike Rides

Biking allows you to cover more ground while still immersing yourselves in nature. Options range from leisurely rides to intense mountain biking adventures:

  • Paved bike paths through parks
  • Gravel roads in rural areas
  • Technical single-track trails

If you don't own bikes, check to see if there's a bike rental place near you. Always wear helmets and bring repair kits for flats. Pack water and energy snacks to keep fueled.

Plan your route in advance, considering distance, terrain, and your abilities. Stop at interesting sights or quaint towns along the way. End your ride with a picnic or visit to a local café.

This is a great way to get around when traveling, too. We rented bicycles in Key West and it made getting around town so easy!

Kayaking and Canoeing for Two

Paddling together offers a unique perspective on nature and tests your teamwork. One of our favorite early dates was heading out on the water in our canoe and watching the space shuttle launch.

Even though I grew up on the space coast, had watched tons of launches, and even worked at Kennedy Space Center briefly, it was magical for this space geek!

Beginners can start with guided tours or rentals that include basic instruction. More experienced paddlers can plan their own trips. Always wear life jackets and check weather conditions before heading out. You don't want a freak afternoon thunderstorm to crash your date.

Pack waterproof bags for cameras and phones. Bring snacks and water in a cooler. Consider stopping at a scenic spot for a floating picnic. Keep an eye out for wildlife like birds, fish, and possibly even dolphins or manatees in coastal areas.

Romantic Outdoor Date Activities

Nature provides the perfect backdrop for romantic moments. Outdoor settings offer unique opportunities to connect with your partner while enjoying the beauty around you.

Stargazing Under the Night Sky

Find a dark spot away from city lights for an enchanting stargazing experience. Bring a large blanket to lie on and warm jackets for when temperatures drop after sunset.

Download a stargazing app to help identify constellations and planets. Pack some hot cocoa or tea in a thermos to keep warm as you explore the night sky together.

Consider planning your stargazing date around celestial events like meteor showers or full moons for an extra special experience. The quiet intimacy of sharing the vast night sky can create powerful romantic moments.

Perseids Meteor Shower

The Perseids Meteor Shower is predicted to peak around August 12, 2024, so it's a perfect time to go stargazing on a clear evening!

Enjoying Sunset and Sunrise Views

Watching the sun set or rise together can be a breathtaking shared experience. Research scenic viewpoints in your area that offer unobstructed views of the horizon.

For sunset dates, arrive early to secure a good spot and bring snacks to enjoy as you watch the sky change colors. Stay after dark to see the first stars appear.

Sunrise dates require an early start but offer a peaceful, intimate atmosphere. Pack a thermos of coffee and some breakfast pastries to enjoy as the world awakens around you.

Cocoa Beach Sunset

Both sunrise and sunset provide perfect backdrops for romantic photos together, capturing your shared adventure in nature's most beautiful light.

Florida peeps: try doing both in one day! One memorable weekend with Dan was spent waking up super early and catching the sunrise on the beach when we lived in Melbourne.

Then we hopped in the car and drove across the state to Sanibel Island and watched the sun set on the west coast. It was such an amazing weekend!

Summer Beach Days and Outdoor Concerts

Pack a picnic and head to the beach for a sun-soaked date. Spread out a blanket, enjoy refreshing snacks, and take a dip in the water to cool off. Build sandcastles or play beach volleyball for some friendly competition.

As the day winds down, catch a stunning sunset together. Many coastal areas host outdoor concerts during summer evenings. Check local event listings for beachside performances or music festivals in parks.

Bring lawn chairs or a blanket, and enjoy live music under the stars. Don't forget bug spray and a light jacket for when temperatures drop after dark.

Winter Wonders: Ice Skating and Snowy Adventures

Lace up your skates for a romantic glide across an ice rink. Many cities set up outdoor rinks during winter months, often in picturesque locations. Hold hands as you circle the ice, then warm up with hot cocoa afterwards.

For snow enthusiasts, plan a ski or snowboard day trip. Hit the slopes together, challenging each other to tackle new runs. If you're beginners, take a lesson to learn the basics side by side.

On a snow day, build a snowman or have a playful snowball fight. One especially snowy weekend, Dan decided to attempt building a snow fort. We gave up halfway (it's hard work!) but it was SO fun!

Afterward, cozy up indoors by a fireplace to thaw out and reflect on your winter wonderland date.

Take advantage of mild spring weather for nature walks. Find local hiking trails and explore the rejuvenating landscape. Listen for birdsong and keep an eye out for wildlife emerging from winter hibernation.

Explore picturesque vineyards and sample exquisite wines on a winery tour. You'll stroll through lush rows of grapes, learning about viticulture from expert guides. Many vineyards offer guided tastings, allowing you to savor different varietals while enjoying panoramic views.

Consider packing a picnic to enjoy among the vines. Some wineries provide gourmet picnic baskets filled with local cheeses, fruits, and artisanal bread to complement their wines.

For a unique experience, look for vineyards that offer sunset tours or harvest season activities. You might even have the chance to participate in grape stomping during the fall months.

Horseback Riding

Embark on a gentle horseback ride through scenic trails. You can cover more ground than hiking while still enjoying a peaceful pace. Stables often cater to beginners, providing calm horses and basic instruction.

Choose from various terrains, such as forest paths, mountain trails, or beachside routes. As you ride, you'll have ample opportunities to observe wildlife and take in breathtaking vistas.

Some ranches offer multi-hour excursions with stops for picnicking or photography. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes for your ride.

Mt Princeton Hot Springs

Relaxing Hot Spring Soaks

Immerse yourselves in the soothing waters of natural hot springs. These mineral-rich pools offer both relaxation and potential health benefits. You'll find hot springs in various settings, from remote wilderness locations to developed resort-style facilities.

Our absolute favorite is Mount Princeton Hot Springs in Buena Vista, Colorado (picture above). It's breathtaking and so very relaxing! Plus, it's only a little over an hour away from us so we can have cozy winter soaks without too long of a drive home when we're all blissed out.

Some hot springs feature multiple pools with different temperatures, allowing you to find your perfect comfort level. Many also offer amenities like massage services or mud baths to enhance your experience.

Chena Hot Springs

For a truly memorable outing, look for hot springs with scenic views, a natural setting like Chena Hot Springs in Alaska (our previous favorite, but Fairbanks is a little far from us now!) or those that allow nighttime soaking under the stars. Remember to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated during your soak!
